Legends in action

Coventry City fans will get the opportunity to see a host of former Sky Blues legends in action in a charity match at the Ricoh Arena.

Darren Huckerby, Lee Carsley, Noel Whelan, Liam Daish and Dele Adebola – who have over 500 appearances for City combined – are the former Sky Blues heroes who will feature alongside a number of former Premier League stars in the fixture against Shanghai Clever FC on Sunday (September 14) at 3pm.

The game, which will be raising money for the NSPCC in Coventry and XPRO, a charity for former professional footballers in the UK and Ireland, has worldwide significance as TV stations and the internet across China will be broadcasting the game live from the Ricoh Arena.

Shanghai Clever FC – a not-for-profit organisation made up of some of the most famous players in Chinese football – are managed by Fan Zhiyi, who formerly played for Crystal Palace and is still well-known in his native country.

Liz Cooper, marketing director at the Ricoh Arena, is looking forward to welcoming some household names back to the venue and promises a great day for football supporters across the Midlands.

“There are some legendary names returning to Coventry and it will be great for supporters to see some of their heroes once again,” she said.

“It promises to be an exciting day and a great occasion with the publicity surrounding the match in China.

“It will be a great day for football fans across the Midlands as there are also a number of other former footballers coming to play, which is credit to them as they are committed to raising money for local charities.

“We also hope that the coverage the match gets back in China will help growth of the sport in the country and boost the funds of the Coventry NSPCC which is a fantastic charity.”

Ken Grant, director of FDKG Limited who has helped to organise the fixture, added: “We really appreciate the players giving up their time to raise money for an excellent cause.

“Their time is precious but credit to them for taking part. We’re looking forward to the game and seeing some of our favourite stars from across the Midlands helping to support two fantastic charities.”

Other former professionals playing in the game include Ian Taylor, Martin Johnson, Maik Taylor, Lee Hendrie, Des Walker and Gavin Mahon.
