Christmas 2008 looks set to break even more records

Christmas 2008 looks set to break even more records at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry following a major investment.

Throughout December nearly 12,000 revellers enjoyed their festive office parties in the Jaguar Exhibition Hall during Christmas Live.

Plans are already underway for Christmas 2008 and bosses at the multi-purpose venue have pledged to invest nearly £500,000 to further developing its Christmas parties.

Daniel Gidney, chief executive of the Ricoh Arena, said the indoor fun fair, live music, entertainment, disco and four-course dinner had proved a winning combination once again. He said: “We want to build upon our reputation as the number one venue for Christmas parties in the Midlands. In 2007 we nearly doubled the number the number of people who came to Christmas Live the previous year with the fairground and entertainment proving extremely popular. Our research and feedback has highlighted certain areas in which we can improve and we will be investing nearly £500,000 in Christmas 2008.”

“We will be improving the theme of the evenings, the drapes in the Jaguar Exhibition Hall, the menu choices and the variety of the entertainment as well as employing an MC or DJ to introduce the different parts of the night. Circus, Circus is planned to roll into the Jaguar Exhibition Hall in early December to provide 15 nights of festive fun and first class entertainment to bring a whole new dynamic to the development of Christmas parties at the Ricoh Arena. We are committed to continually improving our Christmas package and our dedicated sales and events team is already focusing on December – even though it is only February!”

Stars from popular science fiction films

Stars from popular science fiction films and television programmes will be meeting their fans at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

Actors who have starred in Heroes, Doctor Who and Nightmare on Elm Street are attending Collectormania Midlands in the Jaguar Exhibition Hall on Saturday, March 1, and Sunday, March 2.

Leonard Roberts, who plays D.L. Hawkins, and George Takei, who stars as Kaito Nakamura, in hit BBC2 show Heroes will be going along. Brent Spiner, alias Commander Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Jeremy Bulloch, best remembered for his role as ruthless bounty hunter Boba Fett in Star Wars, have confirmed their appearances. Robert Englund, the scary Freddie Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street, Colin Baker, who was the sixth Doctor in Doctor Who, and Hattie Hayridge, who was Red Dwarf’s computer Holly, will also be there.

Jason Joiner from organisers Showmasters said this was a fantastic opportunity for fans of cult science fiction films and TV programmes to meet their heroes. “We have assembled a who’s who of some big names in the science fiction genre and it promises to be a weekend to remember,” he said. “Fans will get the chance to meet the stars, get their autographs and have professionally taken photos with their favourite celebrities. The actors will also be talking on stage about their careers and experiences working in front of the camera. There will also be hundreds of different stalls selling merchandise from the latest action figure and collectable card games to vintage film posters and comics.”

Julie Graham, head of sales at the Ricoh Arena, said Showmasters has been running this kind of event for the last ten years.

“Heroes and Doctor Who are among the most popular programmes on television and this is a not-to-be-missed chance to meet the people who play the characters. We are expecting to attract science fiction fans from all over the region so it is advisable to arrive early.”

The show runs from 9am to 6pm on March 1 and between 10am and 5pm on March 2. Admission after 11am is £5 for adults and £3 for children under 12 while early bird admission before 11am is £10. Amateur dancers

Amateur dancers should fox-trot or twirl their way to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry to take part in what promises to be England's biggest dance competition in 2008.

National Dance Events is organising The English Amateurs Dancers Association’s National Selection Competitions, which are the trials to pick the dancers who will represent England in the World and European Championships.

Selections will be held in various age groups in the couples and team categories over two days on Saturday, April 19, and Sunday, April 20.

Fans of Strictly Come Dancing will be able to buy tickets to watch James Jordan and Ola Jordan take to the floor in the E.ON Lounge along with the top 24 couples the judges consider the best in Ballroom and Latin American dancing at a Gala Ball on April 19 from 8pm until midnight.

Organiser Martin Cutler, who with his wife, Carol, was world champion between 1980 and 1982 in Ballroom and Latin American, said the standard of amateur dancing in this country is extremely high and he expected competition to be fierce.

“People will be able to watch the best couples in the country at all age groups,” he said.

“Amateur dancers from all over the country and abroad will be travelling to Coventry to take part.

“Many of the couples dance with a partner who is not from England so we will have people have Italy , Holland, Switzerland and China representing England.

“The World and Youth Championships for couples are split into juveniles (under-11s), juniors (under-16s), youths (16-19s), amateurs which is 20-34, seniors which is 35-45 and seniors II which is 45-55.

“It is a completely open event which means every single person from around the country that feels they stand a chance can come and dance in front of the judges.

“The next day is dedicated to the formation teams which consists of four or eight couples in teams and they are split into 11 and under, 12-15 years old and 16 years and above.

“We already have 51 teams entered from as far as Dover to Liverpool and Wales to Leeds.”

Julie Graham, head of sales at the Ricoh Arena, said it promised to be a weekend to remember in the dance world.

“Dancers have the chance to represent England in World and European competitions for each age group at cities throughout the world from Macau in China to Moscow in Russia so there is a great deal at stake,” she said.

“It will be great for dance fans in the region to be able to see James and Ola Jordan in the E.ON Lounge alongside the amateur dancers.”

Doors will open at 9.30am on April 19 and 10am on April 20. It costs £15 to enter per person on April 19 and £12 per person on April 20.

The general public can buy tickets for the Gala Ball, priced at £20 each, by ringing Martin on 07768 060486 or emailing natdanceevents@aol.com

A fusion of flavours from across Asia

A fusion of flavours from across Asia

Chips might immediately spring to mind when it comes to the Isle casino in Coventry, but they won't be on the menu at an event later this month (February).

Instead it will be a fusion of flavours from across Asia. The Isle casino, which is situated at the Ricoh Arena, is holding Indian Fusion on Sunday, February 24, which will see a host of Asian dancers and entertainers performing for customers at the venue. City centre restaurant MYO, which is run by Coventry businessman, award-winning chef and television personality chef Rois Ali, will be providing a range of dishes for the event from 9.30pm onwards.

The outlet, which is based in the former Fire Station in Hales Street, will be cooking Indian, Thai and Chinese cuisine to complement the other activities taking place. Paul Godden-Wood of the Isle casino, said the entertainment venue wanted the event to appeal to every aspect of the community.

"As we all know, Coventry has a very diverse community with a range of ethnic backgrounds," he said.

"Since we opened here, we have tried to provide events that will cater for everyone and tried to attract people from right across the city.

"We believe Indian Fusion is going to be extremely popular and I am delighted to have Rois Ali and MYO on board because they are very highly-regarded when it comes to Asian cuisine in this city."

Rois said: "This area of the business is something we feel we can expand.

"The Isle casino is a huge venue and I was very pleased to be approached to provide catering for this event. Our food has been popular in Coventry for over a decade now and hopefully this will be the first of many events like this.

"All the food will be prepared by award-winning chefs from India and all the dishes will be authentic."

The 2008 Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts tournament at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry has now completely sold out.

The extra allocation of tickets for the competition in the Jaguar Exhibition Hall on Thursday, February 21, has been snapped up.

Around 3,100 darts fans will watch three-times winner Phil Taylor attempting to retain his Premier League title. He will be joined on the oche by five-time World Champion Raymond van Barneveld, current World Champion John Part and 2007 Premier League darts runner-up Terry Jenkins, as well as Adrian Lewis, James Wade, Peter Manley and Wayne Mardle. Eight players will compete live on Sky Sports from January to May in 14 league nights over a three-month period for a share of the £340,000 prize money. Daniel Gidney, chief executive of the Ricoh Arena, said the demand for tickets had been phenomenal.

"This is the first time we have held darts at the Ricoh Arena and it looks set to be an amazing atmosphere with over 3,000 fans in the Jaguar Exhibition Hall," he said.

"Our ticket office staff have been extremely busy dealing with requests for tickets and we were not surprised the final batch were quickly bought.

"The Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts tournament has quickly established itself as a firm favourite on the darts calendar with players and fans alike and it promises to be a night to remember at the Ricoh."

PDC Chairman Barry Hearn said the opening night of the tournament had sold out in Glasgow and he was delighted Coventry had followed suit. He said: "This is fantastic news. We were recently able to release more tickets but the Midlands public is clearly voting with their feet for what will be a brilliant night."

The line-up at the Ricoh Arena is:
