Call to the City

Tuesday 17th April

Lord Mayor Councillor Kieran Mulhall has called on the city

Coventry’s Lord Mayor Councillor Kieran Mulhall has called on the city to join in the London 2012 spirit by attending the first Olympic-related football match.

The City of Coventry Stadium will host the decisive play-off match to determine which country takes the last spot in the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament when Senegal face Oman.

Tickets are on sale for the crunch game which will be played on Monday, April 23 (7.45pm).

Cllr Mulhall is urging as many people as possible to come along to the qualifier to show their civic pride in Coventry being a co-host city for the rapidly-approaching Olympics Games.

“The fact that the City of Coventry Stadium has been chosen to hold the Men’s Olympic Qualification play-off match is a terrific endorsement of the venue and the hard work shown by many people through the city,” he said.

“The amount of Olympic-related activity reflects well on the city and I think the enthusiasm that has been shown has shone through ever since it was announced we had been chosen as the only Midlands venue to host Olympic football matches.

“There is a tremendous feeling building up within Coventry and the region as the Olympic countdown moves ever nearer and this qualifier is a major milestone.

“We want as many people as possible to come along to the City of Coventry Stadium to support these two teams in their final step towards achieving their dream of being the final nation to qualify.

“Whether you are a football fan or not, Olympic fever is infectious and this will be a great game to get everyone in the mood for the matches to come during the summer.

“There will be some exciting young footballers on show from the African and Asian continents and this is a night when we can all join in to show our pride in our city.”
