Olympic tickets to go on sale next month

Over 250,000 tickets will be available for people to watch Olympic football in Coventry when they go on sale in March.

The Ricoh Arena, which will temporarily be re-named the City of Coventry Stadium during the tournament, is set to host 12 matches of both the men’s and women’s competitions during London 2012 and tickets for fixtures at the venue will go on sale from Tuesday, March 15.

The process for purchasing all Olympic Games tickets will open for six weeks, enabling people to consider the options before making their final choices. Applications will close on April 26, 2011 and all oversubscribed events will be allocated via a ballot process.

Applications can be made at any point during the six-week application period and it is not a first come, first served process.

Tom Clift, Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership manager for the 2012 Games, said: “With tickets going on sale so soon the excitement surrounding London 2012 is really building in the region.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for everyone in Coventry and Warwickshire to experience the magic of the Olympic Games first-hand and we are honoured to be a Host City for the biggest sporting event in the world.

“The Olympic football tournament is due to begin on July 25, two days before the opening ceremony in London, which means we will be hosting the 2012 Games before London – and that is a huge privilege.

“But the Olympic football is just one of many events and projects happening across the sub-region before, during and after London 2012 and people can find out how to engage with London 2012 right now by visiting www.cswp.org.uk/london2012.”

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) will announce full details of the purchasing process and the finalised schedule for all 650 sport sessions in February 2011.

Daniel Gidney, chief executive of the Ricoh Arena, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to be involved in the world’s largest sporting event here in Coventry.

“We are proud to have brought the Olympics to the region and I hope as many people as possible will come along to the venue to cheer on the teams taking part.

“The Olympic football tournament is the second largest in the world after the FIFA World Cup and in the past today’s superstars such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have played in the Olympics and I am sure this will be a fantastic few weeks which we will all never forget.”
