INTERNATIONAL NETBALL AT THE RICOH ARENA
The Ricoh Arena has been chosen to host the final of an international netball series for the first time.
The England Roses will renew their rivalry with Jamaica this November and December in a three-match Vitality Netball International Series, with a potential series decider taking place in the Jaguar Exhibition Hall on Sunday, 4 December.
It will be the first time in four years that the Sunshine Girls have taken part in a full tour to England and the last time was a nail-biter.
The Roses took the first match in Birmingham before Jamaica levelled the Series in Liverpool. A dramatic 62-58 win for England in the final match at the EIS, Sheffield saw England lift the trophy.
David Armstrong, Chief Executive of Wasps, said: “To have two world-class netball teams playing at the Ricoh Arena for the first time is exciting news for Coventry and the Midlands, and is part of Wasps’ aim to make the Ricoh Arena a vibrant hub of elite sport that sits in the heart of the community.
“We’re expecting to have over 4,000 fans packed into the Jaguar Exhibition Hall on the day, and if the last series is anything to go by, they are in for a real sporting treat right to the very end.
Andy Gibb, Managing Director of the Ricoh Arena, added: “We have an action packed schedule to whet sports’ fans appetite with rugby league, rugby union, snooker, weight lifting and now netball all to come over the next six months - reinforcing the multi-purpose nature of the venue and Coventry as a diverse sporting city.”
The England Roses open the Series with a clash at the Copper Box Arena in London on Tuesday, 29 November.
Three days later the action heads to the North-West as Belle Vue, Manchester hosts a repeat of last year’s World Cup bronze medal match before heading to the Ricoh Arena for the final game.
England international Ama Agbeze, from Birmingham, added: “I’m really looking forward to playing in front of a packed crowd at the Ricoh Arena.
“We already have over one million women and girls playing netball around the UK, and hosting big games like this in Coventry will no doubt help to boost this number even further.”
Jonathan Hunt, development manager for sport and active recreation at Coventry City Council, continued: “Having some of the best netball athletes in the world right on our doorstep is fantastic. The variety of sport taking place in Coventry at the moment, both at a professional and community level, is really encouraging for our ten year strategy to make Coventry a vibrant sporting city.”
